For the second appointment with the Rouge et Noir Horror Nights, Wednesday 21 October at 9.30pm, we meet again with a director we met a few weeks ago for the preview of his "Her Private Hell": with “The Neon Demon” (2016) - screening in the original language with Italian subtitles -, Nicolas Winding Refn constructs a dark and visionary journey into the world of fashion, transforming Los Angeles into an artificial, seductive and disturbing universe. More than simply chronicling the rise of a young model, the film explores a society in which beauty becomes a commodity, an obsession, and a tool of oppression—themes that resurface in Coralie Fargeat's recent, award-winning film, "The Substance." Refn partially abandons traditional narrative to favor images, neon colors, geometric settings, and a hypnotic electronic soundtrack. The result is a work suspended between psychological thriller, horror, and surrealist cinema, in which the line between allure and monstrosity becomes increasingly blurred. At the heart of the film, as mentioned, is a scathing reflection on the contemporary obsession with youth and physical perfection, but also on competition and the transformation of the body into an object to be exhibited and consumed. Beauty, initially presented as a gift, gradually takes on the character of a cruel cult, capable of devouring anyone who approaches it.
